Helping you to practise evidence-based medicine

Palliative care

We present an evidence summary and practical guide on palliative care. The report was commissioned by the United Health Foundation and includes a systematic evidence review covering the control of common symptoms (including pain, dyspnoea and fatigue), service delivery, communication and goal setting. The report also incorporates toolkits provided by eminent authorities in this area, and practical assistance to support the busy clinician seeking to deliver best clinical practice to patients.

Smoking cessation

Commissioned by the United Health Foundation, we present the findings of a systematic review on the interventions for smoking cessation, together with the evidence on health benefits from quitting. Scott Sherman provides a toolkit that equips primary care clinicians with a 12-step guide to a systems approach to help patients stop smoking.

[Erratum] Interventions for smoking cessation, Antidepressants, p 19: Bupropion is not a selective serotonin/norepinephrine uptake inhibitor (SSNRI). Its mechanism of action in promoting smoking cessation is unknown, but presumed related to noradrenergic and/or dopaminergic pathways.[Zyban, Physician' Desk Reference 2007, Thomson PDR, Montvale, NJ, p 1644.] We regret the error.
